You can apply the stain with a brush or a folded lint-free rag. Aim to get the color you want in one coat: a second coat can be applied if needed to get a darker finish, but too many coats will result in the stain lying on the surface, lengthening the time it takes for the subsequent coat of varnish to dry and even preventing it from bonding properly to the surface.

With water-based types, if overlaps show when the first coat dries you can add about 20 per cent more water to a mixed-up solution of stain and apply a second coat over the whole surface, brushing it out well.

After the stain has dried (usually about 24 hours after application), you should rub the surface thoroughly with a dry cloth to remove excess stain.

Staining Wood – DIY Step by Step Guide

1. Shake the can well and then pour the stain into a dish wide enough for you to dip in a cloth pad. Avoid plastic dishes; some stains may attack them.

2. Apply the stain liberally using a cloth pad. It you apply it too sparingly you run the risk of getting light and dark areas instead of even coverage.

3. For greater grain contrast, wipe over each strip with a rag after allowing a minute or so for penetration. Leave to dry for 24 hours before varnishing.
